San Francisco 49ers release injury-plagued defensive end Dee Ford

The San Francisco 49ers released defensive end Dee Ford, whose time with the franchise was derailed by a back injury.

Ford appeared in just 18 regular-season games for the 49ers after they acquired him in a trade with the Kansas City Chiefs in March of 2019. The 49ers surrendered a second-round draft pick to the Chiefs and signed Ford to a five-year, $85 million contract.

He finishes his 49ers tenure with 9.5 sacks, three forced fumbles and 22 tackles. He also played in three postseason games, registering a sack and four fumbles.

Ford, 31, was selected to the Pro Bowl after the 2018 season while with the Chiefs. He has 40 sacks, 12 forced fumbles and 159 tackles in eight NFL seasons.
