As many as 13 Indian footballers have reaped benefits from FIFA’s Fund for Football Players in order to provide financial assistance to players who have not been paid by their clubs in the country.

The list of players include former India players Gouramangi Singh and Subrata Paul and has a total of nine footballers who represented the nation at the senior level.

A senior official from the Football Players’ Association of India spoke to the Times of India on Friday and said, “We had to provide detailed documentation to FIFA about how these players were left in the lurch.

“These clubs have shut shop and players have not been paid. What worked for the players is that the AIFF player status committee had decided in their favour when disputes were brought to their notice.”

DSK Shivajians closed down their club in 2017, leaving the players helpless, who then approached the player status committee. The players won the verdict but the club said they were not in a position to make payments.

Soon after, FIFA was involved and it stated that while grants provided under the rules will not cover the full amount of salaries owed to players, the fund provides an important safety net for players around the world.

Since then, Indian players have received payments ranging from approximately $10,000 for Halicharan Narzary, Subrata Paul and Nirmal Chhetri and $1730 for Pratesh Shirodkar.

The Indian players who are said to have received funds from FIFA under this scheme up till now are Gouramangi Singh, Subrata Paul, Nirmal Chhetri, Laxmikant Kattimani, Milan Singh, jerry Lalrinzuala, Sumeet Passi, Pratesh Shirodkar, Seityasen Singh, Halicharan Narzary, Sanju Pradhan, Baiklian Paite and Soram Poirei.

All of these events simply highlight the plight of the lesser known football clubs in India who are rendered defunct due to mismanagement, inexperience and lack of committment from club owners.
