Cardinals extend their franchise QB

The Arizona Cardinals made it a priority to extend Kyler Murray’s contract. Just before the start of training camp, they’ve done just that.

Murray’s deal will keep him in Arizona through at least 2028, per Adam Schefter. The contract, which terms are still in the works, likely pays Murray quite a bit.

The Oklahoma product played social media hardball this offseason, making it clear that he wanted a new deal by going dark on Instagram, and (at one point) deleting several Cardinals-related posts. While that may sound childish, it got the message across.

Murray and Arizona are a work in progress, with Kliff Kingsbury in charge of the offense. A monumental playoff collapse last postseason isn’t helping matters.

Nonetheless, Murray is young, and pretty clearly a quarterback worth building around. The rest of the regime is a question mark, but not the former No. 1 overall pick.

Kyler Murray contract details: Cardinals extension

Murray’s contract will make him the second-highest paid quarterback in the NFL. It is a five-year, $230.5 million contract extension that ties him to the organization through 2028.

Silence from both sides in the lead-up to training camp did suggest they were talking. Obviously, it ended up being a good sign.

Murray hadn’t spoken to the media since March, but when he did, it solidified his role as the face of the franchise:

“I’m an Arizona Cardinal,” Murray said then. “I’ve done nothing but give my all to the Cardinals and will continue to do that. I’m not really too worried about my future as a Cardinal.”

And there you have it. While trade rumors were floated initially when Murray’s discontent over a new deal became public, eventually Arizona wised up and gave him the deal he was in line for.

Is Murray the second-best quarterback in the NFL right now? No. Yet, that’s just how this system works.

Murray was the next man up for a new deal. Now, the NFL world turns to Baltimore, and Lamar Jackson.
